Reed Wins SL Spelling Bee

 

   SALINEVILLE- Southern Local Schools held their annual district spelling bee on Feb. 15 in the Southern Local Elementary School gymnasium, where 16 students in grades 5-8 competed for the top spot and a chance to participate in the Columbiana County Spelling Bee in March. 

 

   The top three contestants were chosen following four rounds, but it would take another 19 rounds to determine their placement. In the end, eighth-grader Ava Reed, the daughter of Amy Swartz and Marcus Reed of Summitville, took first place with the correct spelling of “apparent.” Seventh-grader Delaney Beadnell came in second and sixth-grade student Daniel Peters earned third place. Next is the Columbiana County Spelling Bee on Saturday, March 4 at 9:30 a.m. at the Crestview Performing Arts Complex with the winner advancing to the 2023 Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. in late May.

 

  Also participating in the district bee were fifth-graders Landon Cranston, Gemma Jackson, Jaymen Maines, Liam Pitts and Maddie Smith, sixth-graders Addysin Andrenok, Bryton Beadle, Eliana Forbes, Brook Hickman and Lucie Lee, seventh-graders Emerson Gotschall, and Gracie Lee and eighth-grader Ella Roberts.
