Class of 2023

Brent McPherson, (Class of 1976), Contributor

During Brent's four years at Southern Local, He earned nine varsity letters serving as a manager for football, basketball, and baseball. The person who nominated Brent pointed out: "Brent was one of those 'behind the scenes' students who contributed immensely to many Southern Local programs." Brent shouldered responsibilities that freed coaches to spend their time developing their athletes. Brent's traits were dependability and trustworthiness. He was always the first to arrive at practice and one of the last ones to leave.

Tricia Smith Green, (Class of 1990), Athlete

Tricia was a two sport athlete. She received two varsity letters in volleyball and three varsity letters in basketball. In her volleyball career, Tricia was captain her senior year. She received Honorable Mention Evening Review.Her success included 739 bumps, 584 sets, 227 passes, 120 points including 14 aces and 49 spikes.

For basketball, Tricia was also captain and helped the team go 20-0 and become Tri-County League Champions. She was the assist leader and received the Coaches Award and Playmaker Award

William Nelson, (Class of 1991), Athlete, (Posthumously)

William earned nine varsity letters in three sports, track, football and basketball. He also went to the State Championship Track Meet twice. William was a very talented and dedicated athlete especially in track. He set the school record in the high jump with a jump of 6'2" in the regional finals in 1990. His jumping got him to a 12th place finish at state his junior year and a sixth place finish his senior year. William was also successful on basketball and football teams. The '88 football team beat Lisbon, Wellsville and United; a feat that hadn't been accomplished in quite awhile. They finished second in the TCL. The basketball team he was a part of beat Wellsville, ended the season with a respectable 12-11 and won the Sectional title and a district semi-final game. 

Dylan Puckett, (Class of 2010), Athlete

Dylan is a two sport, eight varsity letter athlete. In football, Dylan received the Most Improved Defensive Player his sophomore year. As a junior, he scored 14 touchdowns and was names to 1st Team Quad County. His senior year, he set a season record of 171 tackles and again made 1st Team Quad County. He was American Football Magazine Hammer Strength Player of the Year Runner-up. Other awards in football were: 1st Team Defense Morning Journal and Evening Review, SL Career Tackles (327), Warrior Award, Matt Puckett Award, Penn-Ohio Play-off game participant and scholarship winner, and the Ohio State Board of Education Award of Merit.

In baseball the team struggled with three different coaches and the team dissolving in his senior year from lack of players. Dylan earned varsity letters and team MVP and ITCL Honorable Mention.

Marla Pitts Price, (Class of 2010), Athlete

Marla was a three-sport athlete and a standout in the budding Southern Local softball program. In her four years in softball, she earned a varsity letter every year. She had a batting average .462, 14 wins, runs batted in, 59. She helped the team improve every year. Her senior year, the team won sectional runner-up. Marla received the following honors: three times named to the 2nd Team Inter Tri County League; record breaker awards for hits, runs, game RBIs, season RBIs, and career RBIs; Most Outstanding Player Award and offensive award.

Jared Sevek, (Class of 2012), Athlete

Jared was a four-sport athlete. Jared was a standout athlete in cross country. He was a four-year letterman, made the All-County 1st Team all four years, qualified for Regions three years and holds the school record since 2009 for a 5K of 16:38. His junior year, he was 1st Team ITCL and team MVP.

In track, Jared was high point his junior year as well as 1st Team ITCL.

In football, he receive Columbiana County and Evening Review Honorable Mention.

In basketball, he aided the team in beating Wellsville (always a high point) and being Sectional Champions.
