Hall of Fame Inductees

Sondra Grodhaus Backus, Coach/Contributor (Class of 9171)

Sondra Grodhaus Backus is being inducted as both coach and contributor. Over her 36 years at Southern Local, Sondra was the cheerleading advisor for 33 years. Sondra was honored during that time to be a presenter at the cheerleading conference for the Ohio High School Athletic Association. To encourage school spirit, Sondra revived and ran the Pep Club providing pep buses to award games, candy to athletes on game days, beads, donuts, snake dances and anything else she and her cheerleaders could think of to get the Indian Spirit moving. As a contributor to Southern Local, Sondra was also the prom advisor, senior class advisor, work study advisor and yearbook advisor.

Deborah Gorley Boyd, Coach

Deborah Gorley Boyd is being inducted as a coach. Deborah is the winningest coach in Southern Local history. Deborah coached volleyball for 36 years (1974-2010) and accumulated 422 victories. Deborah's winningest team was the 1985 team which went 18-5. During her tenure, Deborah led Southern's teams to seven Tri-County League Championships, 15 Sectional Titles, three District Championships, five District Runner-ups and two Regional Runner-Up trophies.

Other accolades included a Leetonia Invitational Championship, a Wellsville Invitational Championship and a Wellsville Invitational Runner-Up. Honors Deborah received for her coaching included three District I Coach of the Year Awards, recognition from the state for reaching 300 and 400 victory level. Deborah also was given a Life Time Achievement Award. Other activities that Deborah did at Southern Local were: student council advisor, Freshman cheerleader advisor, and Prom advisor.

Ray Brown, Athlete (Class of 1978)

Ray Brown is being inducted as an athlete, specifically as a three letter varsity letter winner in football. Ray played linebacker and fullback as part of two Tri-County League Championship Teams. Ray helped the Indians with the TCL in 1975 and as Co-Captain led the tribe to another championship in 1977. Honors Ray received included: Ohio All Star accolades and All Area Team awards. Coaches awards were: Most Valuable Defensive Lineman and Most Valuable Player.

Roy Brown, Athlete (Class of 1978) (posthumously)

Roy Brown is being inducted as an athlete, specifically as a standout on the football field. Roy played four years of football and earned four varsity letters. He was a linebacker, fullback, punter and field goal kicker. Honors received included being chosen as captain, Ohio All Star, Area High School Scoring Leaders and Evening Review Defensive Players of the Week several times. Roy helped lead his team to two Tri-County League Championships (1975 and 1977).

Clarissa Crable Tsarnas, Athlete (Class of 1996)

Clarissa Crable Tsarnas is being inducted as an athlete. Clarissa earned 20 varsity letters - four in track, three in volleyball and three in cheerleading. Being a consistent setter in volleyball earned Clarissa the following awards: Second Team District I, Honorable Mention All-County two years and she played in the District I All Star game.
